Praising God Through Praying Scripture

Happy Wednesday! We are continuing our series on praying scripture today. If you missed last month’s, you can find it here. We will post a new edition of the Praying Scripture series during the first week of every month. This week, we are looking at praising God through praying scripture. More often than I’d like to admit, I jump into prayer by laying out my frustrations, wants, needs, and complaints, rather than taking time to offer praise to the Lord. I have found that praying scripture is a wonderful way to declare His praises, and I hope it helps to equip you in your prayer life as well.

Below are some quotes on praise, followed by five sections of scripture along with sample prayers. Look for a bonus set of verses and a free printable at the bottom!

Quotes on Praising God

“The happiness of the creature consists in rejoicing in God, by which also God is magnified and exalted.” – Jonathan Edwards

“Satan so hates the genuine praise of Christ that his fiery darts of discouragement are not effective against us when we respond in praise.”  – William Thrasher

“Praise lies upon a higher plain than thanksgiving. When I give thanks, my thoughts still circle around myself to some extent. But in praise my soul ascends to self-forgetting adoration, seeing and praising only the majesty and power of God, His grace and redemption.” – Ole Hallesby

Scriptures and Prayers for Praising God

“Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust and will not be afraid; for the Lord God is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation. With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation. And you will say in that day: ‘Give thanks to the Lord, call upon his name, make known his deeds among the peoples, proclaim that his name is exalted. Sing praises to the Lord, for he has done gloriously; let this be made known in all the earth. (Isaiah 12:2-5, ESV)

Lord, I praise you, for you are my salvation. You are faithful and your perfect love removes all fear. I praise you, my strength and my song. You are mighty, you are strong, and from you comes unlimited joy. You are glorious, your works are glorious, and your Name is to be exalted above all.

O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens….When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him? (Psalm 8:1,3, ESV)

For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his also. The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land. Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker! For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. (Psalm 95:3-7, ESV)

He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities-all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. (Colossians 1:15-17, ESV)

Jesus, you are before all and in all, the firstborn over all creation. By your word all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible. You created thrones, dominions, rulers, authorities, and much, much more. All things were created through you and for you. You are before all things and in You, everything holds together. Jesus I praise you that this is true. I praise you that even when it seems that things are falling apart, you are on the throne and you are holding it all together. You are almighty,
